Life Science Overview

Life Science coursework at the Miller School District includes both Biology and Anatomy/Physiology classes. Each class spans one instructional year. Generally, life science is the study of the living organisms and life processes. Students in life science classes can expect hands-on lab activities, study skill development, real-world connections, and an extensive guest speaker roster.

Fundamentals of English Language Arts Overview

In this small group setting, students will work on the skills of English Language Arts including reading, writing, comprehension, grammar, and spelling. Students in this ELA course can expect a wide variety of assignments, projects, and reading materials.

Fundamentals of Geometry

Geometry is the study of the properties of points, lines, surfaces, and three-dimensional solids. Using prior algebraic knowledge, students will build their understanding of geometric shapes, measurements, and angle relationships.  Students will learn new vocabulary, solve multiple mathematical expressions, and relate their learning to real-world examples.

Materials and Expectations:

Students will be required to take notes, participate in labs, complete and turn-in assignments and demonstrate mastery in multiple levels of assessment. To be successful in all of these areas, students will need to bring the following to class everyday:
1. Pencil
2. Pen
3. Textbook
4. Charged computer

Grades

Exams - formal tests and quizzes used to assess understanding after content delivery and practice. Studying for exams should occur daily rather than in cramming sessions the night before.

Lab Practicals - essentially lab tests that students take in the lab over information they have learned during daily laboratory sessions.

Long-Term Projects - projects that require students to apply what they have learned, usually at the end of a quarter or semester. Long-term projects span the course of a month and may require students to work at home.

Short-Term Projects - projects that require students to apply what they have learned, usually at the end of a unit. Short-term projects span the course of a couple of days to a week and may require students to work at home.

Twenty-Minute Tuesdays - every Tuesday students will be given a review assignment that can cover anything we have gone over throughout the year. It should take about 20 minutes to complete (give or take). Most Twenty Minute Tuesdays will be completed online.

Late Assignments

Points are not deducted for late assignments. You are, however, required to complete every assignment.

Make-up Work

If you know in advance you will be absent, you may get your assignment in advance, and it will be due on the normal date. If you are absent from class for a reason other than a school activity, you will get extra time to complete the assignment. The standard policy is one day absent, two days to make it up.
